Re: Revised Oregon School Activities Association school sports pre-participation exam guidelines for the year 2000

As president of the Oregon Chapter of the National Marfan's Foundation, I wanted to personally commend you on the most recent revision of the sports pre-participation physical guidelines for this year. I found out quite by accident that the guidelines had changed due to my son's interest in playing high school sports. In looking over the form for the required physical, I was surprised and very pleased to see that they had included many questions and specific criteria for doctors to watch for that might help to find undetected cases of cardiomyopathy, Marfan's syndrome, or other cardiac related conditions that occasionally cause premature deaths, especially in athletes. We are pleased to see the Oregon School Activities Association taking this positive step that will hopefully save lives, and wanted to personally pass the word to your group our sentiments as well as to our national organization about this recent change.

In calling around to find a physician to do his physical, I was a bit dismayed to find that some doctors were charging sometimes up to $30.00 more than last year due to the more in-depth physical, and I am hoping that will not discourage participation by potential athletes. If given the opportunity, the OCNMF will encourage doctors to keep their fees for these exams reasonable.

I would like to also provide contact information to pass on to any physicians who may not have kept up with the many advances in Marfan' s treatments and diagnostic criteria and may call your group for clarification. I anticipate at least a few doctors will want a refresher on Marfan's. Please encourage them to contact the National Marfan Foundation at l-800-8MARFAN for up-to-date information on Marfan's and related syndromes.

Respectfully yours, Shelly Moore - President
Oregon Chapter National Marfan Foundation (OCNMF)
